Jason Fabus Quartet presents Two of a Mind: Paul Desmond & Gerry Mulligan

With: Jason Fabus (sax), Sal Lozano (sax), Eric Sittner (bass) and Kevin Van Den Elzen (drums)
In a unique tribute to legendary alto saxophonist Paul Desmond & baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan, LA based saxman and bandleader Jason Fabus invites his mentor, one of LA’s top sax players, Sal Lozano to do an old school student vs teacher sax battle performing Desmond & Mulligan’s classic album Two of a Mind.
Jason Fabus is enjoying a wonderful journey as a highly sought-after professional saxophonist throughout Southern California. This Milwaukee native is the leader of several groups, including his quintet, “The Fabus Five” and is a regular performer at Disneyland. Jason is also an esteemed educator, serving as a coach and clinician at several schools in the area, while also maintaining his own studio of private students in saxophone, flute, clarinet, and piano. Although he is still at the beginning of his professional career, Jason has already performed with many notable musicians including Arturo Sandoval, Jane Monheit, George Benson, Kim Richmond, Wayne Bergeron, Andy Martin, and Van Alexander.
Sal Lozano plays in big bands led by Tom Kubis and Johnny Mandel and is a founding member of Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band. Sal has also recorded with Christina Aguilera, Lalo Schifrin, Michael Bublé, Robbie Williams, Brian McKnight, Maynard Ferguson and Natalie Cole.
Sal has been a member of the Academy Awards Orchestra and the Dancing With The Stars House Band. Other television credits include The Emmy Awards, American Idol, The Grammy Awards, Latin Grammy Awards, ESPY Awards, America’s Got Talent, The Gala for the President at Ford’s Theatre, America’s Funniest Home Videos, The Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon, The Tonight Show, Animaniacs, Pinky and The Brain, and numerous national commercials. His motion picture credits include The Secret Life of Pets, Sing, Ice Age: Collision Course, High School Musical 3, Public Enemies, and Happy Feet. He is a proud endorser of Vandoren Reeds and Selmer Saxophones and conducts clinics and masterclasses around the world. For the past 22 years Sal has been a clinician for Disney Performing Arts.
“Two of the finest talents to emerge in the post-war jazz generation are brought together here for a happy, informal, yet earnest session of music-making. Individually, Paul Desmond and Gerry Mulligan can each look back at a decade of winning jazz polls — Paul as the alto saxophonist of the Dave Brubeck Quartet, and Gerry as a baritone saxophonist who has led his own groups for many years, ranging from a quartet to a full-sized band… [A] series of sweeping performances in which something exciting is happening every instant, whether it be a solo of keen inventiveness or a duet passage in which each line stands up by itself within a whole that sounds like the work of a craftsman composer.” – George Avakian, Original Album Notes from Paul Desmond and Gerry Mulligan’s Two of a Mind
